R2 Hobbies TEH-R31 Build & Review

Props to all the folks that got this chassis. Don’t feel bad if peeps give you trouble for having one, just out drift them!

I ordered this chassis along with everyone else in June of this year. I finally received my Kit 3 months after my order, and my CF Upgrade kit along with parts just last week. In a way I’m sort of happy I’m building it now, with them releasing aluminum bulkheads and other hop ups it makes the build more enjoyable. I love aluminum and CF building! It took over 3 months to just receive my kit. My missing shock parts (the parts that are shorted in the earlier release of the kit) came before my kit even arrived. My kit was delivered to Jamaica NY in early Sept, and then some how found it’s way home to me. LOL

“Love the Prices hate the service…” Local track talk about R2H… ROFL So true man So True.

The Kit

Wheel and tire assembled. Hot water and CA glue on the inside lip between the tire and the rim.

The Build

I thought it started with Bag A, but that’s not the case. The bag letters do not follow alphabetic order. It jumps from letter to letter. Some bags are just screws of one certain size. All flat head screws were one bag followed by another bag full of button heads.

Stock vs Hop Up Motor Mount. You decide….

And the Build begins…

Steering Rack

I had to shave a bit here for it to have smooth steering action without binding or touching.

The Motor Mount

Front One Way
DO NOT buy the R2 front one way. Mine was broken before I even installed it. I will be getting the real deal here.

Aluminum Bulkheads. They are definitely solid.

Solid Rear Axle.

Signature style SJ bulkhead covers! I decided I wanted to retain the SJ look here.

The Review:

The build took about 6 hours. Took a little longer then usual, I had to figure out the flow of the manual. They copied the SJ manual, but ended up switching the order on a couple things to make it the TEH-R31 manual… Luckily I had a SJ manual on hand. My overall feeling about the chassis is positive. For the money I spent approx. $200 total with all the parts. that is pretty cheap for a CF chassis drift car. Like they always say “You get what you pay for”… The plastic is somewhat cheap, and prone for breakage. Replace all broken parts with genuine SJ replacement parts. I have not ran my car yet but I can already see where the chassis would fail. Here is a list of item to be careful with.

1. CVDs
2. Pulley pins. The R2 kit comes with cheap plastic pins that can snap easily.
3. Dampers. They just suck…
4. I recommend not purchasing the R2 front one way. Get the real deal.

Building the CVDs was horrible. The pins did not smoothly pass through the center anchor drum. I do like the fact that it came with all Hex Screws. that’s a nice feature as the real OTA-R31 comes with Phillips head. Would I recommend this kit to anyone? Yes I would. Is it a lot of work to maintain? Yes and No… If you like tinkering then yes. If you want a dependable car then you may want to look at some trusted brand. Do I hate dealing with R2Hobbies CS Team? YES! I cant stand their support team. I just put up with it because of the price…. lol

Notice:

I am joking about R2H and would order from them again, as I have eventually received all my orders. I hope anyone reading this would understand the comedic value in this whole experience.
